The summer season closed on a positive note. Domestic traffic continues to recover and Extra-EU connections increase.

Aeroporti di Roma- Fiumicino and Ciampino Airports
October closed the summer aviation season with a confirmation of traffic recovery. In fact, more than 3.4 million passengers passed through Fiumicino and Ciampino Airports, increasing the percentage of traffic recovery to 78% compared to October 2019.
Fiumicino Airport in October recorded excellent results in terms of traffic recovery compared to 2019: with 3.1 million passengers, it reached 80% of the total volumes recorded the same month last year. Even more marked was the recovery of originating passengers – travelers who had departed from Rome – raising the recovery percentage to 90%.
The European market continues to lead the recovery in traffic volumes with 93% of October 2019 passengers and flights. In this month if on one hand the positive effect of the summer peak ends, on the other hand we appreciate the start of new connections with the beginning of the winter season at the end of the month, such as Cork and Oviedo.
The recovery percentage in 2019 traffic volumes has also grown in the Extra-EU area driven by the excellent long-haul performance observed in the summer period, particularly in the North American market, which recorded the greatest recovery in international traffic with 94% of 2019 volumes. During the summer season, a quick recovery was also observed in the South American market – with the return of Latam, by Aerolineas Argentinas, and the launch of Ita Airways’ flights to Brazil and Argentina – and in the Far East with the activation of Qantas’ new connection to Australia (June) and the reinstatement of the flight to Seoul, first by Asiana (June) and in September by Korean Air. With the opening of the winter season, Rome is once again connecting China to the cities of Chengdu, Wenzhou and Hangzhou thanks to Chinese airlines Sichuan, China Eastern and Air China. Good news also from the Middle Eastern market with the consolidation of Gulf Air’s new route to Bahrain (June) and thanks to the start of Wizz Air’s new connection to Damman.
Domestic traffic has continued to show a positive trend, thanks to tourist flows to traditional summer destinations in the south and the islands, with 2019 traffic recovery of 74%.
Ciampino Airport closed October with over 310 thousand passengers transited through the airport. Although with significantly lower volumes on Ciampino’s total traffic, passengers from the domestic and Extra-EU markets recorded a complete recovery of October 2019 traffic.

Polo Aeroportuale Nordest (VCE, TSF, VRN, VBS)
As the summer season came to a close in October, traffic at the Polo Aeroportuale Nordest recorded 12.8 million passengers from January to October (79% of what was achieved in the same period in 2019, the reference year before the crisis brought about by the pandemic).
Venice Airport exceeded 8 million passengers handled in the first 10 months of the year, including more than 1 million per month from June to September, a 79% recovery of volumes from the same period in 2019.
With the 2022 summer season, Marco Polo reaffirmed its role as the third domestic intercontinental airport, reactivating substantially all routes to North America (New York JFK, New York Newark, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Toronto, Montreal), which were added to the long-haul flight to Dubai already operating since July 2021.
The first ten countries connected by Marco Polo in the summer period were Italy, France, Britain, Spain, Germany, the United States, Greece, Holland, Austria, and Turkey.
In the 2022-2023 winter season (October 30-March 25) the airport will be connected with 73 destinations, covering the European network and, through hub airports, the intercontinental network in a comprehensive way.
Treviso Airport recorded 2.2 million passengers in the first ten months of the year, which corresponds to 79% of traffic for the same period in 2019.
The top ten countries connected by Canova in the summer period were Romania, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Great Britain, Poland, France, Germany, Ireland and Albania.
For the 2022-2023 winter season, 49 destinations are planned, including 43 by Ryanair, which accounts for 85% of total traffic, and six by Wizz Air. New additions include flights to Amman, Gran Canaria, Tallinn, and Crotone by Ryanair, and Suceava (Romania) by Wizz Air.
Verona Airport closed the January-October period with 2.6 million passengers, or 81% of what was achieved in the same period in 2019, registering the highest traffic peak in August with 436,000 passengers.
In the summer season, international traffic took off with 6 new destinations: Paris CDG, Barcelona, Hamburg, Malta, Porto and Palma de Mallorca. In the 2022-2023 winter season, 40 destinations are planned. Direct flights to Paris and Barcelona are confirmed. Air Dolomiti continues its connections on its Munich and Frankfurt hubs, guaranteeing connectivity to international and intercontinental destinations. Great Britain is confirmed as the airport’s top international incoming market, with important spin-offs for tourism and the area’s economy.
