November: Rome Fiumicino Airport surpasses 2019 traffic figures by +4%; Northeastern Airport Hub handled almost 16.7 million passengers in the first 11 months of 2023

In November, with 3.5 million passengers, Fiumicino and Ciampino airports together reached 99% recovery, marking the highest system-wide value since 2019.

Fiumicino’s “Leonardo da Vinci” airport with 3.2 million passengers marks a growth over the pre-pandemic period for the second month in a row, with 4% more passengers than in November 2019.

Point-to-point traffic continues to improve, which this month reaches a traffic increase of +16% compared to 2019, flanked also by short-haul and long-haul traffic, which mark respectively +4% and +6% on November 2019 values.

The performance of the EU market was also excellent, marking +11% compared to pre-pandemic values, supported mainly by traffic to and from European capitals such as Paris and Madrid.

North America and the Middle East are instead the protagonists of intercontinental traffic, marking respectively +31% and +46% growth on November 2019 values.

On the North American market, the routes to Atlanta, Boston and Washington performed well, while the Middle East saw Abu Dhabi, Jeddah and Riyadh. Dubai also did well, surpassing pre-pandemic traffic values this month.

Traffic recovery for Africa improved, which, driven mainly by long-haul traffic, reached +10% growth on pre-pandemic values, thanks also to the good performances recorded on Addis Ababa and Zanzibar.

The excellent trend of the South American market continued, which also increased its recovery levels this month, reaching 85% of November 2019 volumes. São Paulo, November’s top destination, was up on the same month in 2019.

Shifting the focus to the Far East, with Seoul as the month’s most popular destination, traffic figures are up compared to November 2019 for Chengdu and Singapore.

Ciampino Airport G.B. Pastine closed the month of November with around 309,000 passengers passing through the airport.


Polo Aeroportuale Nordest (VCE, TSF, VRN, VBS)

The Polo Aeroportuale Nordest, which includes the airports of Venice, Treviso, Verona and Brescia, handled almost 16.7 million passengers in the first 11 months of 2023, recovering 96% of the traffic of the corresponding period of 2019. In November, almost 1.1 million passengers were handled (recovering 96% of traffic in the same month of 2019). Also in November, traffic was affected by strikes, resulting in cancellations of flights and seats offered.

Venice Airport has exceeded 10 million passengers since the beginning of the year (10.6 million) and recorded around 700,000 passengers in November, with a 98% recovery compared to the same period in 2019, both in progressive and during the month.
First market in November was the domestic market (with a share of 18%), followed by Great Britain, France, Spain and Germany. London, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Rome were the main destination cities chosen by passengers.
The passenger profile surveys carried out periodically at our airports show that Marco Polo has a good mix of outgoing (51%) and incoming (49%) traffic. Fifteen per cent of the foreign passengers declared to be of North American nationality (United States and Canada).

Treviso airport recorded over 2.8 million passengers between January and November 2023, a 94% recovery compared to the same period in 2019. In November, more than 200,000 passengers handled at the airport (90% of traffic in the same month of 2019), with international traffic accounting for 98% of the total.
The main market in November was the Spanish market, followed by Albania, Romania, Belgium and Poland. The main destinations were Tirana, Bucharest, Brussels, Vienna and Madrid.
As far as Treviso is concerned, the figure for the VFR traffic component (visits to relatives and friends), closely linked to the network of destinations available, is interesting, exceeding 15%.

Verona Airport handled around 170,000 passengers in November and over 3.2 million since the beginning of the year. The recovery of traffic volumes in 2019 was 94% progressive and 96% in the month.
The main markets in November were the domestic market (45% of total traffic), Great Britain, Germany, Albania and Egypt. Passengers’ favourite destinations were Catania, Palermo, Tirana, London and Bari.
According to surveys carried out at the airport, 16% of passengers travelled for business/business purposes. 9% of users declared to be resident in Trentino AA.
