In July, the Roman airport system, which includes Fiumicino’s Leonardo da Vinci and Ciampino’s Giovan Battista Pastine airports, reached a total of 5.4 million passengers, up 8% compared to July 2019 and 19% compared to the same period last year.
Looking at Rome Fiumicino Airport, Italy’s main airport recorded an all-time traffic record with more than 5 million passengers passing through, growing 13% compared to July 2019 and 20% compared to July 2023. In the same month, Rome Fiumicino also surpassed the historical record of passengers transited in a single day, reaching 176,000 daily passengers on Sunday 14 July, exceeding the peak values of 2016 and 2019.
The achievement of these results was made possible both thanks to the growth in short-haul traffic, which recorded a 20% increase compared to last year, led by EU Europe, up 21%, and above all thanks to the contribution of intercontinental traffic, up about 23%, led by North America, which was confirmed once again in July as the favourite destination of passengers, reaching up to 39 daily departures from Fiumicino to a total of 16 destinations. Traffic to the United States and Canada grew by 14% compared to 2023 and 33% compared to 2019. New York is still the travellers’ favourite destination, connected to Fiumicino by as many as 12 daily departures.
The performance of Central South America was also excellent, which together with North America is the market that in absolute terms recorded the highest growth compared to 2023, and which has come close to fully recovering its pre-pandemic values. Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, exceeded 2019 values by 10%.
Looking at Africa, traffic continued to increase in July, up 45% on 2023 volumes. Connections to Fiumicino airport grew, with the inauguration of the route to Dakar by ITA Airways, which made its first flight to the Senegalese capital on 3 July.
The flow of passengers to the Far East market saw a 26% increase in July compared to the same month in 2023, and there was a consolidation of traffic on the Rome-Perth/Sidney route, following the resumption in June of the route to Australia.
Ciampino’s G.B. Pastine airport ended July with 339,000 passengers passing through.
Polo Aeroportuale Nordest (VCE, TSF, VRN, VBS)

The Polo Aeroportuale Nordest, which includes the airports of Venice, Treviso, Verona and Brescia, handled over 10.4 million passengers between January and July 2024, up +2% on the previous year and in line with traffic volumes for the first 7 months of 2019. July closed with almost 2 million passengers (+1% compared to July 2023, with 97% of July 2019 traffic recovered).
Venice Airport has handled over 6.5 million passengers since the start of the year, up +2% on the previous year, exceeding 1.2 million in July (+1.5% compared to July 23). Traffic in the first seven months of the year exceeded the volumes handled in the same period in 2019.
Traffic to international destinations, with almost 1 million passengers in the reporting month, accounted for 81% of total traffic. The main international markets were Great Britain, Spain, Germany and France.
The domestic market was the main market during the month, with over 230 thousand passengers (first destination was Catania, with about 42 thousand passengers).
11% of passengers travelled between Venice and the long-haul destinations available to passengers with non-stop flights.
London, Paris and Madrid were the favourite destination cities for Marco Polo passengers.
Treviso airport handled 290 thousand passengers in July and more than 1.75 million in the first 7 months of the year, in line with the same period of 2023 (with a full recovery of 2019 flows in the month and 91% in the progressive period).
The first market in terms of traffic volume during the month was Spain (10 destinations), followed by Albania and Romania.
The main destinations were Tirana (around 44 thousand passengers in the month), Bucharest and Brussels.
Verona airport recorded over 460 thousand passengers in July (+2.4% compared to July 2023) and almost 2.1 million in progressive terms (+6.9% on the previous year). On a progressive basis, the growth in traffic volumes over 2019 was +1%, the figures for the month are in line with those of the corresponding pre-pandemic month.
The Verona airport’s main market was once again the domestic market, with over 170 thousand passengers in the month (12 destinations, 37% of total traffic). The second market was the English market, followed by Spain, Germany and Greece.
Passengers’ favourite destination cities were London, Olbia, Palermo, Catania and Cagliari.

At the Apulian airports of Bari, Brindisi and Foggia in the first seven months, a total of almost 6 million passengers transited between arrivals and departures.
In July Bari airport recorded 825,526 passengers (+13.7%) over the same month of the previous year. Besides the domestic market, which recorded 315,981 passengers, the international market recorded 499,795 pax.
The German market, with about 58,000 passengers, is still the main international market.
Brindisi airport, on the other hand, recorded 404,779 passengers in July (+4.8%) compared to July 2023. Domestic traffic recorded 260,853 pax with an increase (+8.9 %) compared to July 2023. While international traffic recorded 141,411 pax compared to 144,213 in July 2023, a slight decrease of (-1.9%) from July 2023.
The main international market was Switzerland with about 51,000 passengers. Foggia Airport recorded 7008 passengers, up by (+13.6%) compared to July 2023. In the first seven months of 2024, a total of almost 31 thousand passengers passed through the airport (+18%) compared to the same period in 2023.
