The summer season at Fiumicino and Ciampino airports continues to show good signs, confirming also in July the traffic recovery initiated in the previous months. In July, almost 3.6 million passengers transited at Rome’s airports, recovering 72% of the total volumes of July 2019.
Rome Fiumicino – Italy’s main airport – recorded more than 3.2 million travelers with a daily average that reached 105 thousand passengers per day, more than doubling the average recorded the same month of the last year (43 thousand). This progressive increase made it possible to recover about 73% of the traffic volumes carried in the same month of 2019.
In July, the many seasonal activities that have intensified leisure traffic came into full force after two years of uncertainty related to mobility restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, more connections to reach the Dalmatian, Balearic and Greek islands, launch of the connection to Ajaccio and intensification of the connection to Keflavik in Iceland. Traffic to the European Union, in fact, continues to perform well with an 85% recovery in 2019 passenger volumes thanks to tourist flows to and from Spain, France, Germany and Greece.
The Extra-European connections also get stronger with a traffic recovery trend that reaches about 60% of 2019 volumes. It should be highlighted the good performance of the North American market, through the U.S. and Canadian carriers, to which is added since May the new connection to Calgary by West Jet, the recovery of traffic to and from Central/South America, with the return of Latam to Sao Paulo, and the addition of Ita Airways to Brazil and Buenos Aires with one departure per day to both destinations.
Domestic traffic is also growing compared to previous months reaching 70% of 2019 volumes with a recovery driven by tourist flows to Sicily, Sardinia and Puglia. These are accompanied by the strengthening of seasonal connections to Lampedusa and Pantelleria.
Ciampino Airport closed the month of July with 330 thousand passengers passing through the airport, with a decrease in commercial volumes of -37.7% compared to 2019. However, this result is related to the reduction of commercial movements due to noise abatement at the airport area from 100 to 65 flights per day. Polo Aeroportuale Nordest (VCE, TSF, VRN, VBS)
The Polo Aeroportuale Nordest, which includes the airports of Venice, Treviso, Verona and Brescia, handled more than 7.9 million passengers between January and July 2022, recovering 75% of the traffic of the first 7 months of 2019. . The main destinations of the month were Paris CDG, Barcelona and Catania.
Treviso Airport handled more than 260 thousand passengers in July and more than 1.4 million in the first 7 months of the year, accounting for 74% of 2019 flows (recovery in July was 92%). The 92% of July passengers traveled to international destinations (main international market: Romania, followed by Spain and Belgium). Main routes for the month were Brussels CRL, Bucharest OTP, and Dublin.
Verona Airport recorded more than 420 thousand passengers in July and 1.6 million progressively since the beginning of the year, recovering 78% of 2019 traffic volumes (91% in July). The positive traffic performance is related to both the launch of new routes and the reopening of both incoming and outgoing leisure traffic. The contribution during the month from domestic traffic, Verona airport’s main market, was 44%. Second market was the English one, followed by Greece and Spain. Main destinations in July were Catania, Olbia and Cagliari.
