The desire to travel is back and Easter boosts the recovery: the start of the summer season marks the resumption of air traffic.
Aeroporti di Roma- Fiumicino and Ciampino airports
In April, with the start of the summer season, the traffic consolidated. In fact, international traffic grew approximately 864% compared to the same month in 2021.
The recovery of the international market is driven by EU traffic, which reaches almost 75% of the volumes of the same month in 2019 by registering nearly 1,3 million passengers mainly to or from Spain, France and Germany.
Also, the Extra-EU traffic has shown a good pace of recovery (+619% compared to April 2021) mainly due to the increase in traffic to North America which, as a result of the openings and increased movements of the carriers American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Air Canada and Air Transat, is 54% of the 2019 volumes.
Only the Asian countries appear to be still particularly constrained, but it is hoped that the recent easing of measures decided in some areas, such as Australia, may pave the way for a rapid recovery in traffic.
In April 2022 Ciampino airport handled more than 290 thousand passengers, with 42% less volumes than 2019. However, part of this result is due to the drop in commercial movements, from 100 to 65 flights per day, due to noise reduction policies in the area surrounding the airport.
