Aeroporti di Roma- Fiumicino and Ciampino airports
In April, with the start of the summer season, the traffic consolidated. After a slowdown observed at the beginning of the year due to the Omicron variant and the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, passenger traffic at the Rome airport system grew both in March (+44% compared to February) and in April (+38% compared to March).
Fiumicino airport, after 25 months – from the beginning of the pandemic – has been handling again more than 2 million passengers, showing a strong recovery of traffic to Southern Italy and the EU market. The trend appears consolidated compared to March with a 43% increase in volumes.
On average, nearly 80 thousand passengers per day transited at the airport, which represents a significant increase compared to the around 14 thousand registered in the same month of 2021. This result drives the recovery of traffic, which is now 63% of the volumes registered in the same period in 2019.
The network covered a wide range of connections: 150 destinations reached with direct flights to 50 countries, a figure that shows a positive upturn in traffic.
This performance was also made possible by the 65 operating carriers that tripled the number of flights offered compared to the last year.
Among the main international destinations Europe and the US stand out as the favorite ones.
The improved COVID-19 situation, compared to the previous year, has led to a significant increase in both Italian tourism abroad and foreign tourism in Italy, particularly in the second half of the month with Easter holidays and the end of April holidays. In fact, international traffic grew approximately 864% compared to the same month in 2021.
The recovery of the international market is driven by EU traffic, which reaches almost 75% of the volumes of the same month in 2019 by registering nearly 1,3 million passengers mainly to or from Spain, France and Germany.
Also, the Extra-EU traffic has shown a good pace of recovery (+619% compared to April 2021) mainly due to the increase in traffic to North America which, as a result of the openings and increased movements of the carriers American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Air Canada and Air Transat, is 54% of the 2019 volumes.
Only the Asian countries appear to be still particularly constrained, but it is hoped that the recent easing of measures decided in some areas, such as Australia, may pave the way for a rapid recovery in traffic.
In April 2022 Ciampino airport handled more than 290 thousand passengers, with 42% less volumes than 2019. However, part of this result is due to the drop in commercial movements, from 100 to 65 flights per day, due to noise reduction policies in the area surrounding the airport.
