In detail, Rome Fiumicino airport recorded 4.6 million passengers, up 4% year-on-year. Point-to-point traffic, i.e. direct connections without intermediate stops, reached 4 million passengers, up 3% compared to May last year.
Passenger traffic on short-haul routes was approximately 3.6 million, up 3% compared to 2024. This result was supported, again this month, by the good performance of intra-EU traffic and the growth of extra-EU connections, particularly to the United Kingdom, Turkey and Egypt.
Intercontinental traffic grew by 6% compared to May 2024. The performance of North America was particularly significant, up 5% compared to the same month in 2024. Fiumicino airport’s long-haul network was further strengthened by the opening of two new connections to North America: the route to Denver, a brand new service launched by United Airlines on 2 May, and the route to Minneapolis, launched by Delta Airlines on 24 May. The seasonal reactivation of some already established connections also contributed to the growth, such as Air Transat’s flights to Toronto, Delta’s flights to Detroit and ITA Airways’ flights to Chicago.
The Arabian Peninsula confirmed its sustained growth trend, with a 7% increase in passengers compared to 2024.
Particularly positive performance was also seen on long-haul African routes, which showed marked growth, with a 21% increase in passenger traffic compared to the same period last year, driven by the expansion of the offer to new destinations such as Accra and Dakar.
In line with the overall positive trend, connections with Central and South America also recorded an 8% increase compared to May 2024.
Ciampino’s Giovan Battista Pastine airport closed the month of May with 347,000 passengers.
