The Roman airport system, which includes the Leonardo da Vinci airport in Fiumicino and the Giovan Battista Pastine airport in Ciampino, recorded 3.8 million passengers in November, an increase of 10% compared to November 2023 and 9% compared to the same period in 2019.
In particular, Rome Fiumicino, the main airport hub in Italy, exceeded 3.5 million passengers in the first month of the winter season, registering an increase of 11% compared to 2023 and 16% compared to 2019.
Despite the start of the winter aviation season, which is normally characterised by a lower flow of passengers, November traffic recorded high values, especially in the early part of the month. This was also due to the positive effect of the All Saints’ Day holiday on 1 November, which led to an increase in travel on the first weekend of the month.
Point-to-point traffic, i.e. direct flights without intermediate stops, reached almost 3 million passengers, up 13% compared to last year and 31% compared to the pre-pandemic period.
Short-haul traffic recorded around 2.9 million passengers, up 10% compared to 2023, driven by the increase in traffic within the European Union, which was up 12%.
Intercontinental traffic confirmed a growth trend, with an increase of 18% compared to 2023. Connections to North America counted up to 15 daily flights to 14 destinations, recording +42% compared to 2019 and +8% compared to 2023.
Significant improvements also affected connections to the Far East, where intercontinental traffic increased by 35% compared to November 2023, thanks in part to the new route to Bangkok launched by ITA Airways on 16 November.
Finally, destinations in the Arabian Peninsula performed excellently, with a growth of 75% compared to 2019 and 20% compared to 2023. These numbers were boosted by the coming on stream of the new route to Dubai operated by ITA and the attractiveness of Arab destinations at this time of year.
Ciampino’s Giovan Battista Pastine airport closed the month of October with 313,000 passengers passing through.
Polo Aeroportuale Nordest (VCE, TSF, VRN, VBS)
The Polo Aeroportuale Nordest, which includes the airports of Venice, Treviso, Verona and Brescia, handled over 17 million passengers in the first 11 months of 2024, a positive trend of +2.8% compared to the same period in 2023. In November, over 1.1 million passengers were handled (+8.3% compared to November 2023).
Venice Airport has exceeded 10.8 million passengers since the beginning of the year and recorded about 740,000 passengers in November, up +2.2% year-on-year and +7% in the month of reference.
The first market in November was the domestic market (with a share of 19%), followed by Great Britain, Spain, France and Germany. London, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona and Amsterdam were the preferred destination cities for the airport’s passengers.
New for the 2024/25 winter season is the extension of Delta Air Lines’ non-stop flight between Venice and New York-JFK, which will continue to operate until the first week of 2025, before resuming on 10 March. The American carrier’s decision to extend its operations during the winter period is confirmation of the strong demand that Venice is able to generate and is a prelude to the developments that will affect North America from the summer of 2025.
Treviso airport recorded over 2.8 million passengers between January and November, in line with the figures for the same period in 2023. In November, almost 230,000 passengers were handled at the airport (+6.6% compared to November 2023).
The main market in November was confirmed as Spain, followed by Albania, Romania, Belgium and France. The main destinations were Tirana, Bucharest, Brussels, Vienna and Prague.
Within the Venice/Treviso Airport System, in the 2024/25 winter season Ryanair will move the connections to Birmingham, Copenhagen, Lisbon and Stockholm from Marco Polo to Canova, while Wizz Air will bring the flight to Cluj from Venice to the Treviso airport.
The Verona airport handled almost 200 thousand passengers in November and almost 3.5 million since the beginning of the year. The increase compared to 2023 was +15.8% in the month and +7.3% in progressive terms.
After the domestic market, with 48% of total traffic, the main markets in November were Germany, Great Britain, Albania, Spain and Egypt. Passengers’ favourite destination cities were Catania, Palermo, London, Bari and Tirana.
From 22 December the Neos long-haul offer will be enriched with the new weekly connection Verona/Cancun (Mexico). On Egypt, which confirms its leadership among the tourist destinations requested by Italian users, the Verona – Luxor/Cairo route operated by the Egyptian carrier Air Cairo has been added.
Rete Aeroportuale Pugliese (BRI, BDS, FOG, TAR)
In the first eleven months of 2024, Bari and Brindisi airports handled a total of 9,945124 passengers (+ 9.88%) between arrivals and departures compared to the same period in 2023.
Overall between Bari and Brindisi the month of November recorded, between arrivals and departures, 679,171 passengers.
In November Bari airport recorded 483,845 passengers (+25.9%) over the same month of the previous year.
In addition to the national line pax, which recorded 272,278 passengers, the international line market recorded 208,113 pax.
Brindisi airport, on the other hand, recorded 195,326 passengers in November (+13%) compared to November 2023.
Domestic scheduled traffic recorded 170,490 pax, while international scheduled traffic recorded 23,893 pax.
The Foggia airport recorded 5,941 passengers, up by (82%) compared to November 2023, when there were 3,250.
In the first eleven months of the year 2024, a total of 55,159 passengers travelled, compared to 45,165,000 pax in the same period of 2023.Foggia Airport recorded 5,627 passengers, up by (48%) compared to October 2023, which had been 3,791. In the first ten months of 2024, a total of 49,637 pax travelled, compared to 42,308 in the same period of 2023.
A total of 9,315,591 passengers passed through the three airports of Bari, Brindisi and Foggia between arrivals and departures.
