For the fourth consecutive month the Roman airport system exceeds 5 million passengers; The Polo Aeroportuale Nordest recorded almost 1.9 million passengers in September; Overall between Bari and Brindisi the month of September recorded more than 1 million passengers between arrivals and departures.

With 5.1 million passengers passing through during the month of September, Rome’s airport system, which includes Rome Fiumicino’s Leonardo da Vinci and Ciampino’s Giovan Battista Pastine, recorded 9% growth compared to September 2019 and 17% compared to the same period last year.
Looking at Rome’s main airport, Rome Fiumicino airport reached 4.8 million passengers, up 15% on 2019 and 19% on 2023.
Point-to-point traffic, i.e. direct arrivals and departures without connections at an intermediate airport, still performed well: 4 million total passengers and an increase of 27% compared to the same month in 2019 and 17% compared to 2023.
Short-haul traffic, with around 3.7 million passengers, achieved a growth of 18% compared to 2023, with EU up by 9%.
There were also excellent results on the intercontinental traffic front, which increased by 22% in September compared to 2023, with a positive boost from flights to North America, which altogether counted on 37 daily departures to 16 destinations, leading the United States and Canada to record traffic values of +13% compared to 2023 and +30% compared to 2019.
Central South America, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, surpassed 2019 traffic levels, recording +3% of passengers, with the important contribution of the destinations of São Paulo and Buenos Aires, which saw an increase in travellers of 18% and 9% respectively compared to 2019 figures.
The Arabian Peninsula market also performed very well, up 28% on 2019 and up 17% on 2023, with Jeddah and Riyadh up 63% and 48% respectively when compared to September 2023. Abu Dhabi also did well with traffic up 28% on 2023.
Ciampino’s G.B. Pastine airport closed the month of September with 319,000 passengers passing through.
Polo Aeroportuale Nordest (VCE, TSF, VRN, VBS)
The Polo Aeroportuale Nordest, which includes the airports of Venice, Treviso, Verona and Brescia, handled around 14.3 million passengers between January and September 2024, an increase of +2.4% compared to the first three quarters of 2023. Almost 1.9 million passengers were recorded in September (+3% compared to 2023).
The Venice airport handled almost 9 million passengers between January and September and almost 1.2 million in September. In progressive terms, traffic increased by +1.8% over the same period in 2023.
The domestic market was the leading market during the period, with over 1.7 million passengers (19% of total traffic).
The main international markets were Great Britain, France, Spain, and Germany. Over 360 thousand passengers flew directly between Venice and US destinations operating at the airport. The growing interest of American tourists is also confirmed by the regional data on tourist arrivals: arrivals from the United States between January and July were about 800 thousand, +23.5% compared to the same period in 2019, +6.7% on 2023. Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Catania were the favourite destinations for passengers in the first nine months of 2024. On September, China Eastern’s direct connection between Venice and Shanghai was inaugurated (3 frequencies a week), a key link for passenger and cargo flow with China and Far East Treviso airport hadled over 2.3 million passengers since the beginning of the year and 274,000 in September. The airport’s traffic is mainly international. The main market in the first three quarters was the Spanish (12 destinations), followed by Albania and Romania.
Main destinations were Tirana, Bucharest, and Brussels. Information available from passenger profile surveys showed a VFR traffic component (visiting relatives and friends) of 13%.
Verona airport recorded over 420 thousand passengers in September and almost 3 million in the first 9 months of the year (+6.5% compared to 2023).
The Verona airport’s main market in the first three quarters of 2024 was confirmed as the domestic market, with over 1.1 million passengers, followed by the English market and Germany, Spain, Albania and Egypt. The Spanish market, thanks to the introduction of the new routes (Madrid and Valencia) and the confirmation of the routes already operative, showed flows almost double those of the same period in 2023 (with over 200 thousand passengers between January and September).
The destination cities preferred by passengers were London, Catania, Palermo, Tirana and Cagliari.
The route to Paris, thanks to the inclusion of the new summer operation for Charles de Gaulle by Air France and the consolidation for Orly by Volotea, has produced a volume of almost 60 thousand passengers since the beginning of the year, an increase of 26% compared to 2023; the result has led the French national airline to confirm the flight also for the next summer season, bringing forward operations from March.
Rete Aeroportuale Pugliese (BRI, BDS, FOG, TAR)
In the first nine months of 2024, Bari and Brindisi airports handled a total of 8,242,592 passengers between arrivals and departures.
Overall between Bari and Brindisi the month of September recorded 1,121,345 passengers between arrivals and departures.
In September Bari airport recorded 752,522 passengers (+14.7%) over the same month of the previous year.
In addition to the national line pax which recorded 307,140 passengers, the international line market recorded 432,098 pax.
The German market, with 58,000 passengers, was the main international market in September.
Brindisi airport, on the other hand, recorded 368,823 passengers in September (+6.7%) compared to September 2023.
Domestic scheduled traffic recorded 234,639 pax, while international scheduled traffic recorded 130,525 pax.
The main international market was Switzerland with about 43,000 passengers.
Foggia Airport recorded 6,101 passengers, an increase of (13%) compared to September 2023 when there were 5,390.
In the first nine months of 2024, a total of about 44 thousand pax (+14%) of the same period of 2023 travelled.
