Traffic Data August 2024

In August, the Fiumicino airport exceeded 5 million passengers for the second month; the North-Eastern Airport hub handled almost 2 million passengers in August; the Apulian airports recorded more than 1 million passengers between arrivals and departures in August.

In August, the Roman airport system, which includes Rome Fiumicino’s Leonardo da Vinci and Ciampino’s Giovan Battista Pastine, reached 5.5 million passengers, growing by 9% compared to August 2019 and 20% compared to the same period last year.

Rome’s Fiumicino airport surpassed the historic traffic record recorded in the previous month, once again crossing the 5 million passenger threshold. With 5.1 million passengers transited, in fact, Leonardo da Vinci achieved a growth of 14% over August 2019 and 21% over August 2023, surpassing, with 180,000 passengers on Monday 19 August, the all-time record for passengers transited in a single day.
August was also the month of the all-time record for point-to-point traffic, i.e. direct arrivals and departures without connections at an intermediate airport, which reached 4.2 million passengers, an increase of 26% over the same month in 2019 and 20% over 202

Short-haul performance was also excellent, with around 4 million passengers, up 21% compared to 2023, with the EU up 24%.

Analysing intercontinental traffic, the month of August marked a 23% increase compared to 2023, thanks above all to the positive performance of flights to North America, which altogether counted up to 38 daily departures to a total of 16 destinations, with traffic values to the United States and Canada up 14% compared to 2023 and 27% compared to 2019. Central South America’s performance was also positive, coming close to 2019 traffic levels. The city of São Paulo, in particular, recorded a 26% increase over pre-pandemic values.

Finally, with +26% compared to the same month in 2023, and the entry of the Korean carrier T’Way, which from 8 August activated the non-stop connection between Rome Fiumicino and Seoul, Far East showed, together with North America, higher absolute growth values compared to the previous year.

Ciampino Airport G.B. Pastine closed the month of August with 343,000 passengers passing through.

The Polo Aeroportuale Nordest (Venice, Treviso, Verona and Brescia airports) handled over 12.4 million passengers in the first 8 months of 2024, an increase of +2.3% compared to 2023. In August, almost 2 million passengers were handled in total, +1.2% over the same month of the previous year.

The Venice airport exceeded 1.2 million passengers in August, in line with the 2023 trend. Almost 8 million were the progressive passengers, +1.8% compared to the previous year.

The international segment accounted for 81% of the total traffic during the month.
After the domestic market, with over 230,000 passengers, the main international markets were Great Britain, Spain, France and Germany.
Passengers’ favourite destination cities were London and Paris, followed by Madrid, Barcelona and Vienna. Almost 400,000 passengers have been handled since the beginning of the year with the direct flights operating between Venice and North America, to which must be added over 180,000 passengers between Venice and the Middle/Far East (Dubai, Doha, Seoul).

Treviso airport handled almost 300,000 passengers in the month (+1.2% compared to August 2023) and over 2 million in the first eight months of the year, in line with the same period last year.
Spain, Albania, Romania, Poland and France were the main markets during the month.
Tirana, Bucharest and Brussels were the preferred destinations for passengers at the airport.

Verona Airport handled around 470,000 passengers in August (+3% compared to August 2023). More than 2.5 million passengers were progressive, with a positive trend of +6.1% compared to 2023.
The main market was once again the domestic market, with over 170,000 passengers in the month (37% of total traffic), followed by Great Britain, Spain, Germany and Greece.
London, Olbia, Palermo, Catania and Cagliari were the destination cities preferred by passengers.

In the first eight months of 2024, a total of 7,158,787 passengers passed through the Apulian airports of Bari, Brindisi and Foggia between arrivals and departures.
Overall between Bari, Brindisi and Foggia the month of August recorded, between arrivals and departures, 1,232,191 passengers. In August Bari airport recorded 826,500 passengers (+16.5%) over the same month of the previous year. In addition to the domestic market, which recorded 289,110 passengers, the international market recorded 517,504 pax. the Greek market, with about 63,000 passengers, was the main international market in August.Brindisi airport, on the other hand, recorded 399,240 passengers in August (+6.6 %) compared to August 2023. Domestic traffic recorded 247,321 pax with an increase (+8.5 %) compared to August 2023. While international traffic recorded 149,104 pax compared to 143,114 in August 2023, (+4.1%)of August 2023. The main international market was Switzerland with about 49,000 passengers.
The airport of Foggia recorded 6,531 passengers, an increase of (0.7%) compared to August 2023, which was 6,482. In the first eight months of the year 2024, a total of 37,700 passengers (+14.9%) transited the same period in 2023.
